What is a Beatus of Liébana?
The Beatus of Liébana are a series of illuminated manuscripts dating from the 9th century, created in the monastery of San Martín de Turieno, located in the Liébana region of Cantabria, Spain. These manuscripts, known as ‘Beatos’ after the monk Beatus of Liébana, who is thought to have been the author or at least the inspirer of the accompanying commentaries, are an exceptional manifestation of the art and culture of the High Middle Ages.
The Beatus of Liébana are mainly copies of the work “Commentary on the Apocalypse” written by St. John, in which the events prophesied in the Book of Revelation are analysed. However, over the centuries, copyists added other illustrations and commentaries, making the Beatus unique works that combine text and image in an extraordinary way.

Exploring the Beatos de Liébana
Summary of the 4 Beatos de Liébana in Our Collection
- Beatus of Ferdinand and Sancha: This Beatus, also known as the Beatus of Ferdinand I and Sancha, is one of the most outstanding in the collection. It is distinguished for being the last of the Visigothic Mozarabic Beatus, the only one commissioned by Kings, and for having the most elegant illustrations.
- Lorvao Codex: The Lorvao Codex is another treasure of our collection, which stands out for its beauty and sophistication. Its detailed illustrations and elaborate ornamentation make it an exceptional work of art, reflecting the mastery of medieval artists.
- Beatus of Saint-Sever: The Beatus of Saint-Sever is famous for its striking illustrations that influenced centuries later the genius painters Picasso and Matisse. It is the first of the Romanesque ‘Beatus’, being the masterpiece of all European miniatures of this period. It is the richest, most innovative and artistically most important of the “Beatos”
- Manchester Codex: The Manchester Beatus is the most sumptuous of all the Beatuses, the only complete one since none of its folios has been mutilated. It is one of the most illustrated of the Beatus of Liébana, with 123 beautiful miniatures illuminated in gold and silver.
The valuable illustrations of the Beatus of Liébana
These manuscripts are famous for their vivid illustrations, depicting scenes from the Apocalypse, as well as figures of angels, demons, saints and monsters, all rendered in a distinctive artistic style that combines influences from Visigothic, Mozarabic and Carolingian art. The illustrations not only have an aesthetic value, but also serve a didactic and devotional function, helping the faithful to understand and meditate on the teachings of the Apocalypse.
The Beatus of Liébana are not only important from an artistic point of view, but also historically and culturally. They represent a crucial moment in the history of Spain, marked by the convergence of cultural influences from Christian and Muslim Spain, as well as by the flourishing of art and education in the monasteries during the Middle Ages.
