The meticulous illustrations that accompany the text in the fine facsimile not only document the surgical advances of the time, but also provide a visual representation of the surgical methods and tools that Rolando da Parma and other contemporary surgeons used in their daily practice. Rolando da Parma: the prestigious surgical master of the Middle Ages
Rolando da Parma was a pupil of Ruggiero da Fugardo with whom he is sometimes confused.
However, he freed himself from Ruggiero’s influence by proposing innovative interventions. These included, in particular, the hernia operation, which he performed by placing the patient in an inclined position, and interventions on the thorax and lungs that had never been attempted by his master.
The master of the Salernitana School of Surgery: Rolando da Parma
He himself became master of the Salernitana School of Surgery and participated in European surgical training outside the influence of Arab medical culture.
Rolando da Parma: author of a prestigious Chirurgy called the Rolandina
The surgical treatise called the Rolandina enjoyed a considerable reputation in the Middle Ages, now preserved in the Casanatense library in Rome.
It describes the recommended surgical instruments, hernia operations, interventions on the thorax and lungs.
Its particularity lies in the description of the recommended surgical instruments for certain operations. As well as in the illustration of specific operating positions such as the seated position for trepanations or shows supine positions, for pelvic operations.
