What is the Holy Grail: between mysteries, Knights Templar and mystical powers
The Holy Grail, or Holy Chalice, is the cup in which Jesus Christ drank with his disciples at the Last Supper, the texts concentrate on two different stories. On the one hand, those relating to the quest for the Holy Grail undertaken by King Arthur’s knights, and, on the other, those relating the history of the Grail itself from the time of Joseph of Arimathea.
Various legends refer to the Holy Grail, sometimes attributing to it healing properties and sometimes the power to raise the dead or feed thousands of soldiers. The legends depict the Holy Grail in the form of a cup or a fountain.
For about ten centuries, these legends believed that the Knights Templar guarded the Holy Grail.

Fine Facsimile History of the Holy Grail: The Enigmatic Journey of the Holy Cup
The enigmatic journey of the sacred cup from the time of Joseph of Arimathea and the Templars, to the epic quest of King Arthur’s knights and the legends of mystical powers surrounding it
Describes the activities of Joseph of Arimathea after the Resurrection of Christ and portrays him as a preaching apostle and guardian of the Grail.
The History of the Holy Grail or Joseph of Arimathea is a novel in verse of 3500 octosyllables, written by Robert de Boron between 1190 and 1199.
A prose version, composed shortly afterwards and uncertainly attributed to Robert de Boron, is known from about fifteen manuscripts or fragments. Together, Joseph d’Arimathie, Merlin and Perceval in prose form a trilogy called Le Roman du Graal or Roman de l’estoire du Grall.
The story of the Holy Grail. The Knights Templar guarded the Holy Grail
Robert de Boron, on the basis of the Apocrypha, narrates that Christ’s last supper took place in the house of his brother Simon. Joseph d’Arimathie kept the chalice of the Last Supper, in which he collected some of Jesus’ blood before placing it in his tomb. Thrown into prison by the Jewish authorities and deprived of food, he only owes his life to the contemplation of the Grail. After twelve years, he was released by Emperor Vespasian. He then left Palestine, founded a company of followers and created a table to gather them together, in memory of the Last Supper, thus foreshadowing the Round Table. He then passed on the Grail to his son-in-law Bron, known as the “rich fisherman”. Alain, the last of Bron’s twelve sons, receives the knowledge from his uncle Joseph.
The Holy Chalice
Considered to be the chalice brought from Rome to Spain thanks to Saint Lawrence the Martyr in the 3rd century. Prior to its deposit in Valencia, it was in various places in Aragon, such as the monastery of San Pedro de Siresa, the cathedral of Jaca and the monastery of San Juan de la Peña. After a short stay in Barcelona it arrived in Valencia.
Composed by an agate cup 7 cm high and 9,5 cm in diameter, with a foot with handles added later. Dated by specialists to the 1st century, and considered to be an authentic Hebrew cup, given the measurements used at the time for this type of utensil. Made on stone classified as sardius, representative of the tribe of Judah, to which Our Lord belonged. At the bottom, there is also an inscription in Hebrew that alludes to Jesus: “To him who gives light”.
The popes who have visited Valencia – St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI – used it in the mass Eucharists they celebrated during their visits. This gesture about the tradition that concerns us -that this is indeed the Holy Chalice- and the fact that it has been declared a holy jubilee year in Valencia in 2015, reinforce its authenticity.
